Cupping Therapy

An Ancient Technique for Pain Relief

Cupping therapy, a technique that has been practiced for thousands of years, involves placing plastic cups on the skin to create suction, potentially relieving certain painful conditions. The experts at Commonwealth Pain & Spine offer this treatment as an option for patients suffering from chronic pain.

Who Can Benefit From Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy draws blood to or away from certain areas of the body, which may provide relief for certain painful conditions, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Back, neck, and knee pain
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • And more

Cupping therapy is just one of many treatment options the team at Commonwealth Pain & Spine provides. We will work one-on-one with you to create a tailored treatment plan for your needs.

The Benefits of Cupping Therapy

The suction of the cups draws fluid to the area in need of treatment, which expands and breaks open tiny blood vessels under your skin. Your body then replenishes the cupped areas with healthy blood flow and stimulates proper and normal healing at a cellular level. Cupping can provide a variety of benefits, such as:

  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Decreased muscle tightness
  • Improved blood flow
  • Increased range of motion

Cupping may be used in conjunction with other treatment options to provide you with effective pain relief. The team at Commonwealth Pain & Spine understands not all pain is the same.

How Cupping Therapy Works

Commonwealth Pain & Spine will take the time to answer any questions or concerns you have about cupping. Before the therapy, you can expect:

  • Referral: Fill out our self-referral form, and we will contact your primary care physician to review your medical history and contact you for an appointment. If your physician has already referred you to us, we will reach out to schedule an appointment.
  • Consultation: You will meet with our team to discuss your pain management needs and agree on a personalized treatment plan.
  • Day-of: Your therapist will place plastic cups on the treated area with a rubber pump. They will leave the cups in place for several minutes, and may move the cups to stretch and massage the areas.
  • Recovery: After undergoing cupping therapy, you’ll likely have red, round marks that should fade in a couple of weeks. These marks may appear as bruises, but they are not true bruises that injure muscle fibers.
