Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural Steroid Injections for Pain

Targeted Injections for Back Pain Management

Back pain is often due to inflammation and swelling that compresses your nerves or causes muscle pain. The team of interventional pain specialists and dual-board certified physicians at Commonwealth Pain & Spine offer steroid injections, like cervical and lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injections, that reduce inflammation in your spine and back and ease pain, stiffness, and other disruptive symptoms, improving quality of life by helping you to carry out day-to-day activities more comfortably.

Who Can Benefit from Epidural Steroid Injections?

Epidural steroid injections are an effective treatment option for individuals who suffer from back pain due to a range of conditions. Patients who may benefit most from epidural steroid injections are those with conditions such as:

  • Herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Ligament damage

An epidural steroid injection doesn't cure the root cause of your pain but offers relief while you undergo further treatments to heal. Commonwealth Pain & Spine will create a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs for the best outcome.

Let Epidural Steroid Injections Relieve the Pain

With epidural steroid injections, your physician can deliver a potent dose of anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected area for pain relief and reduced swelling. With epidural steroid injections, you may experience:

  • Decreased inflammation around irritated nerves, providing relief from symptoms
  • Enhanced mobility as pain and inflammation subside
  • Improved ability to participate in physical therapy or exercise for recovery
  • Potential to manage pain effectively, possibly avoiding or delaying surgery

Back pain can significantly decrease quality of life and make it difficult to perform daily tasks like sitting, standing, or walking. With epidural steroid injections, you can get relief from pain and inflammation and return to your regular activities.

The Process Behind Our Epidural Steroid Injections

Get started by completing our self-referral form. We'll handle the rest – from contacting your PCP for a referral and reaching out to schedule your appointment.

Here's what you can expect during the process of our epidural steroid injections:

  • Consultation: During your consultation, we'll review your medical history, symptoms, and previous treatments to determine if epidural steroid injections are the best option for you.
  • Injection Procedure: The minimally invasive outpatient procedure is performed while you lie on your stomach in a procedure suite. Your physician will numb the injection site with a local anesthetic and may give you a mild sedative for comfort. Using a fluoroscope for guidance, your physician will inject a combination of a numbing agent and a steroid into the epidural space of your spine.
  • Recovery: You may spend 15-20 minutes in a recovery room after your injection so your physician can observe you as your local anesthetic wears off. The numbing agent in the injection provides immediate pain relief, while the steroid typically takes up to three days to reduce swelling and ease or eliminate your pain.
  • Follow-Up: With routine appointments, we'll determine if further injections are necessary or if other treatment options should be explored.

If chronic back pain affects your daily life, now is the best time to find help. With personalized back pain treatments from Commonwealth Pain & Spine, you’ll experience innovative treatments and best-in-class service!
