Intracept Procedure

Personalized Back Pain Management Solutions

The Intracept® procedure is an innovative option for those seeking relief from chronic back pain that may not be responding to conservative treatments. At Commonwealth Pain & Spine, our team of interventional pain specialists and dual-board certified physicians offer this minimally invasive outpatient procedure to help patients gain a better quality of life through effective back pain management.

Who Can Benefit from Intracept Procedures?

The Intracept procedure uses radiofrequency energy to target and heat the spine's basivertebral nerve (BVN), often linked to chronic lower back pain symptoms such as weakness, prickling, tingling, and numbness. Disrupting the BVN's signal transmission can lead to significant, enduring pain relief.

Intracept is often most effective for patients who:

  • Are experiencing back pain that's reducing their quality of life
  • Have not found relief through physical therapy, medication, injections, and others
  • Are looking for an alternative to surgery
  • Need long-term pain management solutions

Commonwealth Pain & Spine offers a wide range of pain management services, and our team of specialists will work with you to determine if Intracept is the right option for your pain management needs.

How Intracept Helps with Pain Relief

Intracept targets the root cause of lower back pain by disrupting the basivertebral nerve's (BVN) ability to send chronic pain signals. While the BVN can regrow, many patients experience long-term relief, addressing the issue at its source. The Intracept procedure can offer:

  • A solution that addresses the root cause of chronic back pain, not just the symptoms
  • Long-term pain relief, with many patients continuing to experience benefits after two years
  • Improved quality of life through better sleep, ability to enjoy leisure activities, and more
  • Faster recovery time compared to traditional back surgeries

With the right team and pain clinic, back pain won't control your life. Our best-in-class team at Commonwealth Pain & Spine is here to address your unique pain needs effectively.

What the Intracept Procedure Looks Like

Our team at Commonwealth Pain & Spine is here to walk you through the entire Intracept procedure to help you feel comfortable and confident. Before the procedure, we will thoroughly explain each step and answer any questions.

Here's a general overview of what you can expect during the Intracept procedure:

  1. Referral: Using our self-referral form, we'll contact your PCP to obtain a referral and contact you for an appointment.
  2. Consultation: You'll meet with our team to discuss your pain symptoms and explore treatment options, including Intracept, to see if it's right for you. We'll also provide pre-procedure instructions if you decide to move forward.
  3. Procedure Day: You'll receive sedation on your Intracept procedure day. A physician will then use advanced X-ray guidance to insert the slim Intracept cannula into your spine, reaching the BVN. A probe through the cannula delivers targeted radiofrequency energy to the nerve.
  4. Recovery: The Intracept procedure recovery time can vary, but many patients return to work and their regular routine within one to two weeks.

We'll be here to follow up and adjust your pain management plan as needed. Commonwealth Pain & Spine is ready to help you gain control over your back pain and treat you to a better quality of life.
